TAT
-- Tapas Acupressure Technique
Tapas Fleming, L.Ac., Originator
What
is TAT?
TAT is a self-care information processing technique which
is demonstrating effectiveness in the treatment of traumatic
stress, allergic reactions, and fixed negative emotional
and mental states. The results are lasting and 100% effective
in dissolving traumatic stress; 85% for allergies. It is
based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine
and allows information and energy to be processed by the
body-mind system in minutes. It was originally designed
to heal allergies; however, the underlying psychological
traumas revealed during treatment sessions encouraged Tapas
to extend its application to mental health professionals.
It enhances self-healing at the deepest levels of the body
and soul and is an extraordinary complement to the traditional
and new power psychotherapies.
According
to Traditional Chinese Medicine any pain is a condition
of stagnant "qi" or energy. Holding the TAT pose and focusing
on the symptom gets the energy flowing again, releasing
the disturbing symptoms as well. TAT transforms the negative
symptoms of stress and trauma into peace and calm.
How
does TAT work?
A
few points at the front of the head near the eyes are lightly
held with one hand while the other hand holds the base of
the skull. By simply focusing and holding these points on
the face where many acupuncture meridians merge, the client
opens up the flow of held information and stagnant energy.
The technique allows the brain and body to process the stored
information and make the necessary adjustments. As the meridian
energy gets unstuck, the body-mind eliminates the symptom
being treated.
The
TAT procedure involves the client holding the pose and putting
attention on the negative condition and then the opposite
or positive condition. (I don't feel safe in elevators/I
do feel safe in elevators.) If eliminating the emotional
roots of the problem is required, the client holds the pose
to eliminate the origins of the problem and clear the storage
places in the body, mind and life. The technique may require
six steps, concluding with a forgiveness statement. In less
than 20 minutes the client accesses the disturbance and/or
energy stagnation and experiences an energy shift dissolving
emotional and physical distress. Upon completion of the
technique, remembering or experiencing the disturbing situation
or substance will no longer present a problem.

Case
Study
In a telephone consultation, Jed
was able to reduce his anxiety and dread about the possible
and predicted Y2K devastation and destruction. The thought
of not being able to help others because he might not have
enough for himself was triggering this intense emotional
response. Within 20 minutes he was able to use TAT to bring
his anxiety into manageable levels. In a follow-up visit
to my office, we applied TAT to the underlying core issue
continuing to drive this fear of a Y2K disaster. This core
issue emerged from his childhood feelings. The fear and
dread he experienced because of the chaos and neglect in
his home environment were being triggered by the impending
disaster. He held the TAT position for the statement, "I
feel abandoned and lonely because there is no one to help
or support me." The reverse statement was, I feel loved
and supported by life and others, and I deserve to receive
love, help, and healing." After completing all the steps
in the TAT sequence, the anxiety and dread lifted. Two weeks
after the treatment, he remains symptom free on this issue.
Norma
was on the threshold of a new career. However, old feelings
of inadequacy were robbing her of her confidence. She was
unable to empower herself in order to explore employment
opportunities. She feared criticism and rejection. We applied
the 6 steps of TAT for the distorted belief, "I won't be
able to live up to their expectations; others will see my
incompetence." The correction was, "I will be able to fulfill
work expectations with ease; others will see that I am competent
and capable." The correction statement created an averse
physical reaction; however, the pattern was cleared by the
end of the entire TAT sequence. She regained her confidence,
and several weeks after this energy shift, prospective employers
were approaching her.
